On November 3rd, 2017, Stonehaven's Board of Trustees and leadership put a historic stake in the ground that will have a major impact on the school's future. The school has made a commitment to launch an upper school program beginning in August of 2020. The school will add a ninth grade in 2020-2021 and then will continue expanding through twelfth grade by the 2023-2024 school year. In May of 2024, we will graduate our first official class of students.
Classical Christian education offers a radically different approach to education from Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. The leadership at Stonehaven believes our Christian community deserves and desires a Christ-centered classical school that completes all three stages of the Trivium: The Grammar Phase (K-6th), The Logic Phase (7th-9th), and The Rhetoric Phase (10th-12th). Our children have approached the school's leadership and expressed an interest and a passion for Stonehaven creating an upper school for them. Luke 11:11, "What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent." Our parents continue to express interest and desire for a classical Christian upper school. A question we ask on our spring parent survey every year is "What about Stonehaven would you like to see changed?" The most repeated response to this question has been the desire that Stonehaven complete the Trivium through twelfth grade. The demand for a classical Christian upper school exists in our community.
Determining when Stonehaven could be ready to begin a ninth grade was a difficult decision! It was not made without significant prayer and deliberation. Through extensive research and feasibility studies, the Board of Trustees learned that successfully launching an upper school depended upon three things. First and most importantly, it was necessary to generate demand and interest in an upper school. The commitment of the students and parents must precipitate the launch of an upper school. Second, it would be crucial to develop a thorough and detailed plan for the program. Third, implementing a capital campaign to raise enough money for the program would be required. The Board decided that all three of these requirements could be accomplished with the "Class of 2024".
We believe an important component ensuring the success of this launch will be effectively partnering with the school community in establishing a like-minded vision and plan for a Christ-centered classical upper school. Questions about staffing, facilities, enrichment programs, curriculum, tuition, and much more must be answered before August of 2020. We will be engaging our parents extensively to help throughout this process. In addition, we are excited to find creative avenues for our children to participate in the creation of Stonehaven's upper school. We will build this dream together.
